How does this program differ from an M.B.A.?

In an M.B.A. program, management is typically examined within the context of finance, marketing, and human resources. While these are important perspectives, technical managers need to understand managerial issues and challenges in the context of emerging trends in science and technology. Many M.B.A. programs do not have technology-centered courses or faculty.

I have an M.B.A. Should I apply for this program?

Yes. The combination of an M.B.A. and an M.S. in Technology Management is powerful because it blends a command of finance, management, and marketing with an understanding of how best to deploy what an executive learns in business school in a technology-oriented environment.

I have not taken math in a long time. How much calculus do I need to know?

You need to have a working understanding of the basic principles. You will not need to do a great deal of computation. However, a basic understanding of calculus will allow you to apply statistical decision-making tools in the development and management of new products and technologies.

I have many years of experience in technology, but I never completed an undergraduate degree. Is there any way I can be admitted to the program?

No. A U.S. bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from a non-U.S. educational institution is required in addition to significant relevant experience.

What kind of jobs can I hope to get upon completing this program?

The program is designed for people with technical backgrounds who want to sharpen their understanding of business in order to advance into executive positions. Graduates will be well positioned to work in any major industry that develops and manages technology as a core business or in the service of running an organization.

Can I spread my program of study out over a longer period of time?

No. Candidates for the degree are expected to make a serious commitment of time and energy to the program and are required to complete their course of study in sixteen months. Students should not enter the program if they anticipate difficulty in completing it within that time frame, especially residencies. You are admitted to EMSTM as part of a cohort that moves through each phase of the program together, learning from each other as much as from faculty, mentors, and guest lecturers.

Do I have to take the required courses in a particular sequence?

Yes. You are admitted to EMSTM as part of a cohort that moves through each phase of the program together. The program has been designed to proceed in logical sequence. All admitted students must enroll in TMGT K4116 Technology in the Business Environment and BUSI K4003 Corporate Finance during their first term. The Executive Seminars must be taken in three consecutive terms.

How does the program assist students with career development?

The Office of Student Life and Alumni Relations at the School of Continuing Education and Columbia’s Center for Career Education (CCE) assist students with their career development through a variety of career programs, services and resources, which are highlighted here. Students will also meet communications executives from many New York City firms, and attend workshops and seminars where there are opportunities to hear about job opportunities. Additionally, the internship program is designed to provide access and exposure to potential jobs.
