Should students in the sustainability management program be currently working in the field?

The program is ideal for professionals currently working in or aspiring to be in management positions in regulatory compliance, facilities management, operations, and environmental stewardship. It’s geared towards those who have some form of sustainability responsibility in their current position, are looking to incorporate this into their current organization practices, or are looking to switch current career paths to pursue opportunities in this field.

Are some college majors or backgrounds more appropriate than others for individuals in the program?

College level science, math and economics are preferred but not essential if familiarity with these subjects has been developed by other means. Practitioner experience is greatly valued and accomplishments in the fields of sustainability management will be considered.

How is the Earth Institute involved in this program? Will I be a part of that community?

The Earth Institute, Columbia University jointly administers this program with the School of Continuing Education. Program director, Professor Steven Cohen is also the executive director of the Earth Institute. Faculty from the Earth Institute also teach courses in the five areas of study. Additionally throughout the course of the semester the Earth Institute hosts multiple seminars on issues related to sustainability management, lectures and special events which students are invited to attend.

What sorts of coursework and concentrations does the program include? Will I be able to take advantage of courses at other schools within Columbia?

The program includes five core areas of study, which provide an opportunity to take courses in other schools and departments. Students wishing to specialize in a particular area will have the opportunity to do so with an elective chosen from the University’s rich offerings in sustainability management and science.

How does this degree differ from sustainability management programs at other universities?

Courses in environment and sustainability management are drawn from across the university. Our pioneering research informs these classes combined with our expertise in how to equip students with the hands on knowledge to be effective problem solves in these areas. Our unique program is offered on both a full-time and part-time basis and draws on expertise from across the campus and throughout the Earth Institute.

What jobs will I be prepared for upon completion of this program?

Graduates will be able to pursue careers in the fields of sustainability management, sustainable development, environmental stewardship, and management consulting, among others. This degree also helps prepare students for careers as leaders and general managers in virtually any organization.

If I am admitted to the program, how long will it take me to complete it?

Students typically complete this program in three years, although it can be completed in as little as one year. The pace of study is flexible.

Can I do this program part-time? Is it possible to work while studying in this program?

Yes, it’s possible to do this program on a part-time basis and also hold a job. But students should keep in mind that the program requires a serious time commitment, both in and out of the classroom.

Do I have to begin the program in the fall?

Students are admitted in the fall and spring semesters.

Do I need to take the GRE? Is an interview required also?

Official scores on the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) general test are not required but may be submitted in support of your application. An admissions interview may be required.

Does this program provide housing?

Columbia does not provide housing for Sustainability Management students. However, students may find off-campus housing.

What sort of financial aid is available? Are there scholarships?

This program will be eligible for Federal Stafford Loans pending approval by the State of New York. There are no scholarships.

Is this program available to international students? Can I get a visa?

International students enrolled in the program on a full-time basis are eligible to receive a student visa. Part-time students are not eligible.

How does the program assist students with career development?

The Office of Student Life and Alumni Relations at the School of Continuing Education and Columbia’s Center for Career Education (CCE) assist students with their career development through a variety of career programs, services and resources, which are highlighted here. Students will also meet communications executives from many New York City firms, and attend workshops and seminars where there are opportunities to hear about job opportunities. Additionally, the internship program is designed to provide access and exposure to potential jobs.
