Registering for Classes

Columbia University

You may register online from April 2 through April 6, and during the regular registration dates for the D and Q sessions (see Calendars).

Students admitted to the University for the upcoming fall term should obtain course approval from the dean of students of their school or division and then apply to the Undergraduate Visiting Student Program at the School of Continuing Education.

Barnard College

You should go to 203 Lewisohn Hall, with a completed Add/Drop Form to register for classes. You are not required to have the signature of your dean or advisor to register though you should consult them to ensure you are fulfilling all requirements. Registration is April 2 through April 6 and during the regular registration dates for the D and Q sessions (see Calendars).

Teachers College

You will register at Teachers College during the registration periods established by the Teachers College Office of the Registrar.

Late registration takes place on the second, third, and fourth days of each session. For some courses permission of the instructor may be required. A $50.00 fee will be charged for late registration.

As a current student, you may add or drop courses free of charge on the second, third, and fourth days of each session. Permission of the instructor is required for admission to a class after the fourth day of the session and the classes missed are counted as unexcused absences. See Calendars for change-of-program periods for the various sessions.

You must submit a Registration & Add/Drop form to 203 Lewisohn Hall if you wish to add or drop a class. Please note that there is no refund of tuition for individual courses dropped after the last day of late registration unless you withdraw from the Summer Sessions.

Withdrawal from Summer Session

Students may not drop a course after two-thirds of the class meetings have been held. A mark—either a UW (unofficial withdrawal), or a grade averaging uncompleted work (as F) with grades received on completed work—will be assigned to any student who has not dropped the course before the designated date for the session (see Calendars).

Maximum Point Loads

Columbia College

You may not register for more than 8 points in any one six-week session or in overlapping sessions nor for more than 16 points for the entire summer.

School of General Studies

You may not register for more than 9 points in any one six-week session or in overlapping sessions nor for more than 15 points during the entire summer period.

General Studies students who wish to take Mathematics S1003 College algebra and analytic geometry or Mathematics S1011 Calculus I who have not recently taken the College Board mathematics achievement test or the GS Mathematics Placement Examination must take an informal diagnostic placement test. This test is given during the summer registration periods.

Click here for online registration for the placement exam. Students without an appointment will be accommodated as space permits. Students must present a photo ID before taking the test.

The Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science

You are allowed to register for a maximum of 6 points in any one six-week session and a maximum of 12 points for the entire summer.

Barnard College

You may not receive credit for more than two courses or more than 8 points in any one six-week session. Barnard does not apply more than 16 points of summer course work toward your degree nor do they confer transfer credits for any class with a grade of D or lower.

The Columbia Registrar will automatically send a transcript of summer courses taken and grades received to the Barnard College Registrar. To ensure transfer of credit, you should consult the Summer Course Approval section of the Barnard Web site.

Graduate School of Arts and Sciences

A student who offers summer courses in partial fulfillment of the course requirements may not receive more than 9 points of credit for courses completed in any six-week period, 12 points for courses completed in any combination of sessions totaling nine weeks, or 15 points for courses completed in any combination of sessions totaling 12 weeks. No exceptions can be made.

Summer classes are, by nature, concentrated in terms of time and workload. We do not advise you to register for more than one 3-point course in a six-week session if you are working full-time.
