Richard Louv

Richard Louv delivers a powerful call to action to reconnect people, especially children, with nature. Society has an outsized faith in technology, but has not fully realized or even adequately studied how human capacities are enhanced through the power of nature, he maintains.

Richard Louv is the author of The Nature Principle: Human Restoration and the End of Nature-Deficit Disorder and 8 books about the connections between family, nature and community. He has written for The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Times of London, and other major publications.

Presented by the Columbia University Landscape Design Graduate program and the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation, this event is free and open to the public.

Columbia University’s Master of Science program in Landscape Design and the Association of Professional Landscape Designers of New York will host a seminar, Marketing Strategies for Landscape Professionals, on March 3, 2011.

Knowing and understanding your audience intimately is critical to the success of green industry professionals. During this seminar, Chris Heiler, a green industry writer, author, speaker, and consultant with extensive social media marketing experience will cover topics from his book: The Little Green Book of Big Marketing Tips and Tactics for Landscape Professionals. These include:

• Earning client loyalty
• Building a brand
• How to become an expert
• Networking and building relationships
• Community involvement
• Internet marketing and social media
• Different ways to use a portfolio effectively

Heiler will also share case studies from other landscape professionals around the country and provide ideas to immediately implement into a business.

Green roofs offer many benefits in urban areas, from aesthetic to environmental to practical. They help minimize the effects of pollution, reduce the urban heat island effect, improve energy efficiency, and provide a natural oasis in the urban jungle.

Speaker Bios

William F. Foley, CSI, CCPR, has been directly involved with green roof specification, consulting, installation assistance, and project oversight for five years. Most recently, Foley has taken a new position as NE sustainable technologies specialist with Tremco Roofing Division. His responsibilities include green roofing systems, photovoltaic systems, and reflective roof system alternatives. In addition, Foley has been an instructor for "Green Roofs for Healthy Cities," teaching classes across the U.S. For more information: www.tremcoroofing.com.

Amy Norquist is a green building entrepreneur, specializing in the design and installation of green roofs and living walls. Her company, Greensulate LLC, is based in New York City and has offices on Long Island and on the west coast. Norquist has over 20 years of experience in environmental conservation/protection and has worked with green buildings for over five years. Greensulate’s clients range from large corporations to the individual brownstone owner or co-op building.
