Guy St. Clair
In addition to his role as Lecturer and Subject Matter Expert (SME) at the Columbia University M.S. in Information and Knowledge Strategy Program, Guy St. Clair is the President and Consulting Specialist for Knowledge Services for SMR, a management consulting practice in New York City. He is a graduate of the University of Virginia (A.B., Liberal Arts) and the University of Illinois (M.S. - Library and Information Science), and in 2000 he was named as a University of Illinois Graduate School of Information Studies Distinguished Alumnus. From 1991 to 1992, he was President of the Special Libraries Association (SLA) and in 2010 he was named to SLA's Hall of Fame. He also served as a member of University of North Carolina School of Information and Library Science Board of Visitors from 2006 to 2011.
Among other recognitions, St Clair was the Delegate Leader 1996 for the Information and Knowledge Management Delegation to South Africa sponsored by the Citizen Ambassador Program ("People-to-People"). In Germany in 2004, the Checkpoint Charlie Foundation presented St. Clair with the John Jacob Astor Award, presented annually to recognize a single individual, American or German, who has contributed significantly to the exchange of knowledge between Europe and America.
St. Clair has written or co-authored sixteen books, including Beyond Degrees: Professional Learning for Knowledge Services (New York and Munich: K.G. Saur, 2003), Change Management in Action: Industry Leaders Describe How They Manage Change in Information Services (Washington, DC: Special Libraries Association, 1999), and a variety of other titles relating to information management, knowledge management, and strategic learning. He is also the author of numerous articles about knowledge services and knowledge strategy, many of which can be accessed at SMRShare.
St. Clair has also authored two organizational histories: A Venerable and Cherished Institution: The University Club of New York, 1865-1990 (New York, NY: The University Club, 1991) and SLA at 100: From “Putting Knowledge to Work”® to Building the Knowledge Culture: The Special Libraries Association 1909-2009 (Alexandria VA: Special Libraries Association, 2009). In the latter, the final chapters outline Guy St. Clair's philosophy about knowledge services, knowledge strategy development, and his predictions for the future regarding the knowledge domain in the workplace.
