Are retired faculty members or retired officers of the University entitled to any benefits that apply to auditing?

Yes. Retired faculty and retired officers may audit selected classes without charge (other than course-specific fees). Additional information on tuition benefits for retired faculty and retired officers may be found on the Human Resources Web site.

What happens if I apply after the suggested application date?

You may still apply; however, your application may not be processed before the first day of registration.

Where can I get descriptions of the classes?

You can search for courses available to auditors and courses and descriptions on this site.

Can courses be audited in any term?

You may audit courses during the fall and spring terms, but summer term courses are not available to auditors. If you are registered for a course in the spring, however, your Columbia University ID privileges are extended through the summer.

How will I obtain call numbers for the courses I am interested in registering for?

The Directory of Classes, produced by the Registrar’s Office, includes call numbers and classroom locations. Please be sure to obtain the call number for the AUDITING version of the class, not the credit-bearing version of the class

How will I know if I am actually registered?

A message on the line will tell you, “You are now registered for….”

What if I am unable to register until after the registration period?

You may register if spaces are available, but you will be charged the University-wide late registration fee.

What if I want to switch courses?

You may make the change on the phone or on the Web. Dropping all of your classes is considered a withdrawal and you must come to campus to complete the withdrawal papers in 203 Lewisohn.

Where can I obtain a copy of the School of Continuing Education Bulletin?

If I decide not to take a class, after I have registered for it, how do I get a refund?

Refunds are only given up to the second week of class. All withdrawing students are charged a University-imposed $75 withdrawal fee.

How will I learn the specific dates and times when I can register?

If you have submitted a completed School of Continuing Education application admission form, you may simply call 212-854-4488 during registration and you will be told the specific hours when you are permitted register. You are encouraged to submit your application before the deadline. You may apply online or you may drop off the form in 203 Lewisohn.

Once I am registered, how do I obtain an ID card and an e-mail account?

How do I pay for the courses I am auditing?

After you have completed telephone registration, you are best advised to go to 210 Kent Hall to pay your bill with a check. At the same time you can pick up your ID card and open an e-mail account, if you choose. Bills are sent by e-mail only. No paper bills are sent. Should you prefer to wait until you are billed, you may incur a finance charge. Credit card payments are possible, but the University charges an additional service fee.
