Students are encouraged to take courses in both sessions, but with permission from the director may take one session.

The Columbia Arabic Summer Program (CASP) offers intensive instruction in the Arabic language through texts, multimedia materials, and activities designed to situate the language in the context of cultures in which it is spoken.

The language of instruction is Modern Standard Arabic (MSA), but students also have opportunities to be exposed to various colloquial Arabic dialects.

Experienced instructors use a communicative approach that emphasizes listening, reading, speaking, writing and culture. Activities designed to teach all skills spring from real situations and current events. Classes are held in technologically advanced smart and electronic classrooms.

The program also includes:

  • Daily free tutoring provided by an experienced tutor
  • Readings of Arabic short stories, poetry, and current newspaper articles
  • Live television and radio broadcasts from the Middle East, movies, tape recordings, the Internet, video clips, and access to interactive instructional facilities
  • Trips to acquaint students with the magnificent Middle Eastern heritage on display in museums and libraries of New York City. Visits to Middle Eastern neighborhoods and restaurants, and lessons in Middle Eastern cuisine

Students in the Columbia Arabic Summer Program follow the Summer Term application and registration procedures.

Middle East and Asian Languages and Cultures

Literatures and Cultures

  • CLME S4031D. Cinema and Society in the Time of Terror and Total War: 9/11 at the Movies. 3 pts.
Runs from the week of May 27 to Jul 03

The purpose of this course is to examine the influence of the events of 9/11 and the subsequent US-led invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq in our creative imagination, and in the movies in particular-both American-made and foreign, documentary and fiction. Taking New York as its point of departure, the course will begin with an examination of the figure of Arabs and Muslims, as well as the threat of terrorism, in pre-9/11 films made in the United States, and then proceed to examine the films that have been made since those tragic events. With the cosmopolitan disposition of New York as its principal frame of reference, the course is only tangentially interested in the portrayal of Arabs and Muslims in these films, and is far more closely concerned with the manner in which these films reveal the trauma of post-9/11 anxieties prevalent in American society, psyche, and culture in general. This is a lecture course designed to navigate the traumatic experiences of New York as a global metropolis and as the principal site of the epochal events of 9/11. It is intended for students at all levels, and no prior knowledge of cinema or politics is presumed.
