Society in the Time of Terror and Total War: 9/11 at the Movies. 3
pts.
Runs from the week of May 27 to Jul 03
The purpose of this course is to examine the influence of the events of
9/11 and the subsequent US-led invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq in our
creative imagination, and in the movies in particular-both American-made
and foreign, documentary and fiction. Taking New York as its point of
departure, the course will begin with an examination of the figure of Arabs
and Muslims, as well as the threat of terrorism, in pre-9/11 films made in
the United States, and then proceed to examine the films that have been
made since those tragic events. With the cosmopolitan disposition of New
York as its principal frame of reference, the course is only tangentially
interested in the portrayal of Arabs and Muslims in these films, and is far
more closely concerned with the manner in which these films reveal the
trauma of post-9/11 anxieties prevalent in American society, psyche, and
culture in general. This is a lecture course designed to navigate the
traumatic experiences of New York as a global metropolis and as the
principal site of the epochal events of 9/11. It is intended for students
at all levels, and no prior knowledge of cinema or politics is presumed.
