The Carlton Arms

One housing choice for American Language Program students is in a Columbia University suite- style dormitory called the Carlton Arms, located about 7 blocks away from the American Language Program office. You can live in the Carlton Arms all year as long as you continue to be enrolled for full-time classes at the American Language Program.

There are 6 to 12 students living in each suite. You will share a bedroom with one other person (called a double) and share bathroom and kitchen facilities with others in your suite. All suites are co-ed. All double rooms are single sex. Each suite has two bathrooms: one for males, one for females.

You will be provided with a single bed, dresser, wardrobe, chair, and desk. You are responsible for providing your own linen, towels, and pillows. Rooms are equipped with telephones and Internet access through Ethernet jacks. There are laundry facilities in the basement. The building is not air-conditioned. Smoking is not allowed in the dormitory.

You must be enrolled in full-time American Language Program classes during every session for which you apply.

While students who stay in the Carlton Arms for successive semesters have the option to remain in the dormitory between semesters, they are not guaranteed the right to keep the same room for their entire stay.

All residents in University accommodations are subject to the rules and regulations of University housing. Students who disobey these rules and regulations will have their housing contracts cancelled and will have to leave the dormitory. It is expected that each resident be clean, quiet, and considerate of other students.

Housing Application

Space is limited. Please apply at least two months in advance. Rooms are assigned on a first-come first-served basis. Confirmations will be sent when an application is processed. Exact room assignments will be available at check-in.

  3. Nonrefundable damage/cancellation deposit of U.S. $300 by wire transfer (for wire information, please see the housing application).
