Shelley Saltzman, Associate Director, Senior Lecturer
Dr. Shelley Saltzman, a Senior Lecturer with 20+ years of experience, is the ALP’s Associate Director for University and Global Programming. The classes she teaches range from Level 1 (a beginning ESL course) to Level 10 (a credit-bearing university writing course). An innovator in Legal English program development, she designed and teaches a course for Columbia Law School LLM candidates. She has been an official scorer of the essay component of the TOEFL and is one of the lead readers of the ALP essay examination. A frequent presenter at campus, national, and international conferences, Saltzman serves on various university-wide committees on language instruction and was Director of ALP –Tokyo in Japan. She holds a B.A. in linguistics from Barnard College, where she graduated summa cum laude and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, and an M.A. in linguistics from The Ohio State University, where she was a Presidential Fellow. Her Ph.D. in philosophy of education from Columbia University's Graduate School of Arts and Sciences was conferred with distinction. During Columbia University’s 250th Anniversary, she was nominated by her students and selected as one of the 250 Columbians who have made a difference.
