Actuarial Science Student Work
2012 Poll Survey of Health Insurance Market
In 2012, students assisted with the completion of a poll survey on healthcare, health insurance, healthcare providers and insurance professionals. The survey contained questions involving Medicare, Medicaid and commercial insurance. Approximately 20,000 individuals received the survey via electronic communications.
The graduate students who contributed to the survey were Kwame Duah Adjei-Yeboah, Ying Dong, Min-Min Lyu, Qing Fang, Grace Wu, Can Wang, Rui Tang and Lorry Xie.
Articles and Presentations from A Global Perspective in the Health Insurance Market
Columbia University Actuarial Science students in the “A Global Perspective in the Health Insurance Market” class were divided into eleven groups, based on the students' country selections. Each team wrote an article examining the health insurance market in that country.
Students wrote articles and gave presentations, teaching the class on the subject matter including: healthcare systems, private vs. social insurance, comparisons to US systems, the current health insurance carrier market, reinsurance, and how products are sold.
They offered feedback on the roles that actuaries played in the specific markets, developing criteria as part of their course work, which they combined with a review of other articles in the international healthcare market. The student articles are currently being published in various actuarial and healthcare journals, such as the Society of Actuaries' section newsletters.
"We are very proud of the work that has been performed by the students in this course." says Actuarial Science Program Director Noor Rajah. "They have had an opportunity to see first hand how the different healthcare markets function. Their work adds value to the actuarial community in providing valuable information to actuaries and other industry professionals... information that is difficult to collect."
"A Global Perspective in the Health Insurance Market" is taught by Adjunct Professors Michael Frank and Don Rusconi.
